ROYAL SOIREE

The evening opens the concerts of the “Waiting for the King. Weekend Borbone” section, dedicated to Gorizia and its illustrious characters: the Bourbon family.

The history of Gorizia is intertwined with that of Charles X: the last Bourbon king chose the city – then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire – as the site of his exile, and he spent the last days of his life there, until his death in 1836 at Palazzo Coronini.

The figure of the sovereign is also closely tied to that of Gioachino Rossini, which somehow allows us to link the city of Gorizia to the great composer of the 19th century through this indirect thread.

Rossini wrote, in fact, “Il viaggio a Reims,(The Journey to Reims)” the official opera for the coronation of Charles X-occurred on May 29, 1825 in the Cathedral of Reims-which was performed at the Théâtre-Italien in Paris on June 19 of the same year; the Piccolo Opera Festival will bring the opera back, exactly two hundred years after its premiere, in 2025.

The concerts of the “Waiting for the King. Weekend Borbone” section, made possible by the valuable contribution of GO! 2025, mark the wait for the great lyrical spectacle – “The Journey to Reims” – which will take place within the program of Nova Gorica and Gorizia European Capital of Culture.

On Saturday 22 June, Palazzo Coronini Cronberg will host a Rossini soiree with three young soloists from the Accademia of Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, with which the Piccolo Opera Festival has a well-established artistic partnership.

The musical programme, centred on the relationship between Rossini and the Bourbons of France, is inspired by the social evenings that the great composer gave at his estate in Passy on the outskirts of Paris, and alternates famous French opera arias with chamber pieces from the Pechés de Vieillesse (Sins of Old Age).
