La contadinaJohann Adolph Hasse

La contadina by Johan Adolph Hasse, a German-born composer with an Italian flair, is a typical intermezzo from the 1700s. These short pieces were the soap operas of their time and were performed during the intervals of the serious Grand Operas. This pocket-sized musical comedy is quick and filled with humour. A film-like production, performed in two incredible locations on both sides of the Italian/Slovenian border, guarantees and highly enjoyable night.

Johann Adolph Hasse La contadina (Opera in two intermezzi)

In the first intermezzo, rich Don Tabarrano and his mute servant Corbo meet the peasant girl Scintilla in a garden. Tabarrano falls immediately in love and Scintilla takes advantage to extort money and precious objects, all the while planning her escape with her lover Lucindo. Corbo understands the deception but is unable to protect Tabarrano.

In the second intermezzo, Tabarrano and Corbo disguise themselves as Turkish pirates and capture Scintilla and Lucindo as they are about to flee by boat. After some chaotic scenes, Scintilla realises that Lucindo has escaped without her. The opera ends as she accepts the courtship of Tabarrano and the joins him in a joyful dance.
