“The 2021 edition of the Piccolo Opera Festival opens under the auspices of very good news: Nova Gorica, Slovenia and Gorizia, Italy will be European Capitals of Culture in 2025! An achievement opening a four-year term in which borders will be falling quicker than ever thanks to the increasing cultural sharing and cooperation throughout our territory. The Piccolo Opera Festival aims to grow stronger and become an established cross-border opera festival through its innovative project to provide an authentic “Opera Experience without borders”. Two operas, Gaetano Donizetti’s Don Pasquale and Astor Piazzolla’s Maria de Buenos Aires, will be performed in two historical mansions, one located in Italy (Teatro Verdi, Gorizia) and one in Slovenia (Vila Vipolže), despite being less than 7 kms from each other. The border will also fall in the name of music with the celebration of the 700th anniversary of the death of poet Dante Alighieri, who has inspired such composers as Liszt, Verdi, Donizetti and Puccini. A greater number of open-air music events to be held in newly added locations in parks and historical gardens will take place within the “La verde musica” section and the premieres of the “Passeggiate musicali - Musical walks” and the “Concerti del gusto - Concerts of taste”. The programme also celebrates three outstanding tenors, Enrico Caruso, Franco Corelli and Mario Lanza and the 50th anniversary of Igor Stravinsky’s death with a special edition of the Histoire du Soldat. Stay tuned for future updates, we are preparing to offer you true Enchantment!”
